the white house. the program calls for deep budget cuts and new revenues. joel brown is in washington with the latest on this. good morning, joel. >> betty, good morning. in this week's long battle over raising the debt limit, optimism has been hard to come by. that seemed to change yesterday, at least in the senate. we so you sam republicans, some democrats, some liberals, some conservatives negotiating a deal. >> it's time to get down to the business of actually solving this problem and i think we now are seeing the potential for a bipartisan consensus. >> reporter: president obama may invite congressional leaders back to the white house, now that there's a new bipartisan plan on the table, a group of senators known as the gang of six unveiled the proposal tuesday. it trims about $4 trillion from the deficit over the next decade, with $500 billion cut immediately. the proposal also includes new tax revenues and cuts to medicare and med medicaid.

the plan stands a better chance in a tea party backed measure in the house. the gang of six plan is gaining support in the senate, several republicans say they think it could pass, with a majority of 60 or 70 votes. >> there's just so many things about this plan that are going to make sense to fiscal talks and i'm one of them. >> reporter: but the proposal still faces hurdles in the house. some democrats oppose cuts to medicare and medicaid while many republicans like disliked planned tax hikes. >> we know default is not an option. >> reporter: with the clock wipeding down a last ditch deal is still in the works. it would allow president obama to raise the debt limit on his own. on the senate floor yesterday majority leader reid announced that he and other congressional leaders were heading back into white house negotiations later today but at this point no official talks, betty, are on the schedule. >> joel brown in washington this

morning, thank you, joel. the debate sparked an online outburst from a freshman congressman. debbie wasserman schultz questioned allen west after he left the chamber. west responded with an unusually personal e-mail, wrote west "with you are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the house of representatives. if you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise shut the heck up." in an e-mail reply a spokesman for wasserman schultz says west is upset because the congresswoman said west was trying to balance the budget on the backs of seniors and the middle class. bachmann says she suffers

from migraine headaches but they don't inxat tate her for days. >> i'm prescribed medication and they keep my migraines under control. i'd like to be abundantly clear. my ability to be able to function effectively will not affect my ability to serve as commander in chief. >> bachmann is running neck and neck with mitt romney in the case for the republican presidential nomination. and the driver who is allegedly responsible for a deadly wreck in upstate new york has been arrested for driving while intoxicated and negligent homicide. he passed a slow moving tractor and sideswiped a van full of amish drivers. five passengers were killed in the crash yesterday, ten others injured. four members of a family were killed by a flash flood in

colorado. officials say they trove on to a washed out section of a highway. the mother and three daughters died. the father survived. yosemite national park a desperate search continues. hike hikers saw three fall yesterday. a war fugitive is under arrest. hadzic was on the run for three years. he was the last remaining figure sought by the u.n. war crimes tribunal. today british prime minister david cameron will be questioned by members of parliament. yesterday rupert murdoch, his son and former chief executive were questioned during

testimony. yesterday he was attacked by a protester with a foam pie. he refused during all of this to accept responsibility and said his only fault was trusting the wrong people. charlie d'agata is in london with more. >> reporter: good morning to you, betty. british newspapers couldn't refuse the headlines. it's british prime minister david cameron's turn in the firing line. lawmaker also grill cameron over his relationship with top executives at rupert murdoch's "news of the world." especially his decision to hire andy coulson as his communications chief. police arrested coulson in connection with the scandal, also his connection with rebekah brooks. >> he is a neighbor, a friend,

but i deemed the relationship to be wholly appropriate. >> reporter: in her own interrogation, tuesday brooks admitted something went wrong at the tabloid and described allegations into hacking into murder victims phones as pretty horrific. the prime minister cut short a trip to africa for his emergency meeting at parliament to stand the growing criticism about his relationship with the murdoch empire. >> that you have had frequent meetings with prime ministers in your career. in the period after your arrest -- >> i would say leave me alone. >> reporter: during three hours of testimony murdoch apologized for the role his employees played but said he's not responsible for what he called the fiasco over the hacking. >> who is responsible? >> the people i trusted to run it and the people they trusted. >> reporter: murdoch says he has

no plans to step down from his multibillion-dollar empire. this is the most serious political crisis of the prime minister's 15-month career. the leadership isn't under much threat. opposition leaders want to know what was he thinking hiring someone with that much baggage. >> charlie d'agata in london, thank you. investors were apparently pleased with murdoch's testimony. news corp. stock ended up 5.5%, gaining back $2.2 billion over the $8 billion it lost since the scandal began. just ahead on the "morning news" airlines get set to make a big and expensive announcement. plus new bombshell evidence about casey anthony, did the prosecution leave out critical testimony? this is the "cbs morning news." specialists, lots of doctors, lots of advice... and my hands were full. i couldn't sort through it all. with unitedhealthcare, it's different.

lifted a car high into the air. the geyser of water erupts out of the sewer during flash flooding on monday. the back of the car was damaged by the incredibly strong force of water. well amazing pictures of mt. etna in italy erupting, red hot molten lava is being shot high into the sky and flowing down the slopes. it's beautiful actually. clouds of ash shut down bun airport and delayed flights. mt. etna is one of the most active volcanos in the world. back here at home it may not be hot as molten lava but it is close. the worst of the heat wave is moving from the west to the east clothes. the east coast will be blasted by soaring temperatures into the midweek. today and tomorrow could be the hottest days in years. this month alone more than 1,000 heat records have been broken across the country. computer expert john bradley testified in june someone

cuesing casey anthony's computer googled the word chloroform 80 times. prosecutors used that to argue she was planning her daughter casey's murder. yesterday bradley said he made a mistake and it was googled only once. major nadal hasan faces 13 counts of murder for the attack in 2009, if convicted he could face the death penalty. on the "cbs moneywatch," apple is up and so is the calorie count at fast food restaurants, great. ashley morrison is here in new york with the latest on that. >> good morning, betty. asian markets you were up today. tokyo's nikkei rose 1% while hong kong's hang seng fell just a fraction. today wall street gets a new data on home sales and another

round of corporate earnings on tuesday. the dow made its best day of the year, the blue chips jumped 202 points while the nasdaq gained 61. after the closing bell apple beat even the best expectations, third quarter earnings more than doubled and revenue jumped 82%. the company says it sold a stunning 20.3 million iphones in that period. apple stock jumped 5% on that news. american farlz airlines is planning for the future, expected to upgrade their fleet and order as many as 400 new fuel-efficient planes from boeing and airbus, could cost over $20 billion, this comes as the company is expected to post a net loss of about $235 million, and possibly sell off its american eagle subsidiary. going green is going to cost you a little bit extra at least for the nissan leaf. the automaker is raising the price for the electric car by

on the "cbs morning news," here's a look at today's weather. the heat and humidity in the midwest will move toward the east coast. stormy conditions will form in the afternoon from the northern plains to the gulf coast and rocky mountains. the temperature will be a little bit below normal along the west coast. here's another look at this morning's top stories. a budget bill passed by the house moves to the senate where it faces almost certain debate but a bipartisan plan may face a deal. and rupert murdoch apologized yesterday but accepted no responsibility for the phone hacking scandal. british prime minister david cameron testifies today. and in this country, 14 people are under arrest for

hacking attacks. the fbi conducted raids in several states against the group that calls itself anonymous. they are charged with cyber attacks on paypal, visa and master card. armand keteyian reports. >> reporter: simultaneous raids driven by the u.s. attorneys office in san jose, california. agents hit six homes in new york along locations across the country, seizing hard drives and computer accessories. according to the government the arrests were bases against paypal, had suspended an account tied to wikileaks, cutting off online donations. the group has taken credit for hacking websites of the cia in the city of jo are lan dough after police arrested people for handing out sandwiches to the homeless without a permit. this man calls himself commander x and part of anonymous and

orchestrated the orlando project. he asked us to hide his identity. >> the power of anonymous is that we have the ability to affect change on the internet. you have a sale online, all of the sudden we snap our fingers and that site is gone. >> reporter: their method of choice, a denial of service attack where hackers overwhelm websites with a huge volume of requests for information, crashing the sites, says commander x, for a cause. >> that process is the equivalent of a virtual sit-in. it's no different really than taking of seats at the lunch counter during the '50s, the civil rights movement in the '50s and '60s. >> reporter: 16 people tied to the attacks were arrested tuesday but sources say they're not leaders in the group but rather people who volunteered to help in the attacks. armand keteyian cbs news, new york. this morning on "the early show" an insiders view of the

good morning around welcome to 9news now. today is wednesday, july 20th. i'm andrea roane. >> i'm mike hydeck. we start with break news out of arlington. police officer seriously injured in an early morning crash along washington

boulevard on glebe road. >> surae chinn joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: i want to show you the accident right off the bat here. you see the police cruiser. lost control. ran into the brush. the officer is in serious condition in the hospital. you see that second car there, too, in the median. she's suffering minor conditions also in the hospital. we have crystal here, public information officer with arlington county police to tell us what happened. >> at 2:15 this morning, an officer was responding to a call when he was involved in this serious accident here at glebe road and washington boulevard. you that happened around 2:15. there was a call for a fight, is that correct? >> yes, there was a call in the immediate area at boston mall for disorderly and a fight. >> obviously, the officer didn't get to that call. did the driver of this accident see the officer coming? >> we're still investigating that. still the very beginning parts of this accident investigation.

we'll go back out live to the scene. we'll show you how this will impact traffic this morning. we're look out in arlington, virginia, north glebe road. the parameters have been set as surae had mentioned, we do have the road closed at washington boulevard. all four corners. what you need to know, the best way to get around it during this morning. 15th street to north utah street. that will get you to fairfax. from there, you can hop back on to glebe but as you can imagine by looking at the live picture, we have two cars involved, we've got the front of the police cruiser peeled off and it looks like they'll be there trying to reconstruct the scene. you'll have to consider the alternate for your wednesday morning rush. we want to show you other places that are dealing with construction. particularly in virginia. as we take a look at the inner loop, you'll find it in two stretches, first between 50 and 66 and again from route 7 over to 123. moving along to maryland, i want you to watch for a work
